Found in collections. The 1954 American Bowling Congress tournament consisted of 95,000 games played by 16,000 players over 45 days in March and April. The five bowlers pictured here were some of Multnomah County's best. Several of them frequently appeared in Oregonian sportswriter Bob Hulen's bowling column 'Bowl 'Em Over' throughout the 1950s, as weekly high scorers at local bowling alleys. Fergie Risk was at one time the proprieter of Gresham bowling alley Gresham Bowl, and later a co-owner of East Side Lanes in Portland. Jim and Kazuo "Kaz" Fujii were brothers who grew up on the Fujii family farm on Cherry Park Road in Troutdale. When their family was interned from 1942 - 1945, the farm was looked after by Andrew and Charlotte Cunningham. In the mid-20th century, Fujii farms covered over 450 acres in east Multnomah County.
The team pictured here included two pairs of doubles partners: Tom Shiiki and Fergie Risk, and Jim and Kaz Fuuji. Ted Mullan bowled with a Bill Bennett of Gresham. - Date
