Provenance

Harry Barger built Barger Mills, Inc. on the present-day site of Gresham City Hall in the 1940s. It was destroyed in a massive fire in 1949, but Barger rebuilt it and continued to operate it until 1952. It was one of a long series of business enterprises he undertook in Gresham, others being Hoodland Carpets and the residential development of Gresham Butte (Barger Heights), which was partially completed before the City halted construction on the steep slopes. This photo previously belonged to Beverly Rice. The Rice family home is visible at the right edge of the photo, and Virgil Rice worked for Harry Barger in the early 1950s.
