Voters approved a bond for its construction in 1949 in response to soaring enrollment at nearby Gresham Grade School, which became West Gresham Grade School when the new school opened. Students attended 1st-4th grades at West and 5th-8th at East. With the construction of Dexter McCarty Middle School in 1968, East and West both became K-6 schools.
