Description from trademark application: a black background with a red, white and black border, and a red cross in the centre. The words "Red Cross Oil" in large white letters are at the top of the label. The words "Trade Mark" are in small white letters above the arms of the cross. The figures "1849" in white are at the left side of the cross and the figures "1857" in white are at the right side of the cross. The words "Water White" and "High Fire Test" in white letters are below the arms of the cross. The words "Brilliant & Pure" in white are at the lower end of the cross and partly upon it. The words "For Family Use" in red are below the cross and below this are the words "Whittier, Fuller & Co. Sole Agents" in white.
